Chandigarh, January 20

The Sector 17 Plaza wore a colourful look today as hundreds of students, inspired by Swedish environment activist Greta Thunberg, joined hands to take lead and inspire change.

‘Climategiri’, as they call it, saw participation of more than 5,000 school students, teachers, NGO activists and UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore.

Louis Lopez, principal of St Stephen’s School, said youngsters across the world have been walking out of school and joining the protests against the climate crisis. “So, we thought to initiate such an action in Chandigarh. We feel fortunate to get much support from one and all,” said the principal.

RD Singh, Secretary of the Independent Schools’ Association, said students and teachers from more than 140 schools in the tricity participated and showcased the major environmental challenges’ by way of green-circus, fashion show on theme of green living, slogan-writing, poster and collage making, models on climate change, graffiti on urgent climate action, solo and group songs and street plays.

Steve Dom Rocha, Secretary of PRATYeK, a Delhi-based Child Rights group, came to participate in Climategiri, along with child rights activists.
