The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Saturday warned all affiliated schools to ensure that they develop their own website and update it all round the year.

It was in 2011 when CBSE first observed that many schools affiliated with the board have not yet developed their own website and have not uploaded the required information there.

Eight years on, there has been no change for 51 middle, higher and senior secondary government schools of the city as none of them has a website of their own.

The websites of rest of the government schools are not updated either. A quick glance at these websites can tell that they are rarely operated. The information uploaded on websites are as old as 2014.

The board said, “Every affiliated school will develop their own website containing comprehensive information such as affiliation status, details of infrastructure, details of teachers, including qualifications, number of students, address-postal and e-mail, telephone no, copies of transfer certificates issued, etc as may be directed by the board from time to time.”

The website so created should also have information regarding fees charged in accordance with para 2.3.8 and para 2.4.9 of Affiliation Bye Laws 2019.

New mandate under NEP

Not only the board, even the tweaked National Education Policy (NEP) – 2019 draft has mandated public disclosure on the school website and on the State School Regulatory Authority (SSRA) website for both public and private schools, which would include information on the numbers of classrooms, students, and teachers, subjects taught, any fees, and overall student outcomes on standardised evaluations such as the National Achievement Survey (NAS) and State Achievement Survey (SAS).

The dimensions on which information has to be disclosed, and the format of disclosure, will be decided by the SSRA. It will have to be made available and kept updated by all schools, on the aforementioned public website maintained by the SSRA, on the schools’ website and must be physically available for public inspection in the school and on request to any member of the public.

Why school website is important

Parents should be able to make informed choices while admitting their child to a school. To achieve this, all relevant information of schools must be available in the public domain; this will include information in addition to what is available as a part of the accreditation process, including fees structure, facilities, learning outcomes, details of teachers among others while choosing a school for their child, said ministry in NEP 2019.
