As part of the laughter series in the memory of the late Jaspal Bhatti, Tagore Theatre Society, under the aegis of the UT Department of Cultural Affairs, staged a play, “Chekhov ki Duniya”, based on stories “Surgery” and “Hunt”.

It was presented by the Media Marine Group and directed by Krishan Rathee. It was based on stories of Russian writer Anton Chekhov.

The opening story, “Surgery’, which was structured in a Russian village, generated humour through an unsuccessful attempt by a dental surgeon and his assistant to remove a tooth of a priest, Vaskov.

Allegations and counter-allegations between the patient and the fake doctors lead to an acrimonious debate on the issue and later a scuffle.

The intervening narrative about Chekhov’s life and works by Rathi, though impressive, had no dramatic element while the concluding story “Hunt” was nicely enacted. The story revolved around activities of Peter, a professional seducer of married women.

He exhibited his skills while impressing his sincere friend’s wife Reena. Unaware of Peter’s motifs, his friend introduced him to his wife.

Peter’s intentions are revealed to the audience by his solo narrations. However, Reena’s convincing pleas at their meeting made Peter realise the futility of his misadventures.

Kuldip Sharma, Director, Tagore Theatre, honoured the artistes while Rajiv Mehta compeered the show.
