Chandigarh, September 28
From tomorrow onwards, the city residents will get an extra one-hour water supply, both in morning and evening.
At present, the city gets regular water supply from 4 am to 9 am and 6 pm to 9 pm. However, the supply hours will be 4 am to 10 am and 5 pm to 9 pm from tomorrow.
Having missed several deadlines, the augmentation of Phase 5 and 6 water supply was inaugurated at the Sector Water Works by UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore and MP Kirron Kher.
MC Commissioner KK Yadav said as per the sharing pattern, Mohali would get an additional 5 MGD (million gallons per day) of raw water while Panchkula and MES Chandimandir each will get 3 MGD of additional raw water. The balance 29 MGD of raw water will be available to Chandigarh, which would ease the demand, which is at its peak during summer.
Guv nod for Rs 38-cr water storage project
Punjab Governor and UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore today gave his consent to provide Rs 38 crore to upgrade the water storage capacity, from 45 MGD to 90 MGD, at the Sector 39 Water Works. The reservoir receives supply from the Kajauli water works. However, its capacity is inadequate. The water stored in the morning is supplied in the evening and the quantum of water received and stored in the evening is supplied the next morning.
Now, rate hike on cards
Officials said they would now move a proposal to increase the water tariff. “Once this service starts, we will bring the agenda of increasing the water rates before the MC House. The Audit Department had earlier objected to the losses incurred due to non-increase in the rates,” said an engineering department official.
