Mohali, March 19

The local police today claimed to have busted a gang with the arrest of three persons for allegedly committing a fraud with people in the district through OLX and Paytm by posing as Army officials.

The suspects have been identified as Islam, Taleem and Riyaz Ahmad, residents of Jeelpati village in Bharatpur, Rajasthan. However, three accomplices of the suspects are still on the run.

SSP Harcharan Singh Bhullar said the three suspects posed as Army personnel to win the trust of people by posting fake photos and identity cards of defence. He said the suspects offered to sell household and personal belongings and later disappeared after getting money from their victims. The suspects had committed 23 such frauds and defrauded people to the tune of Rs 8 lakh, he said.

Bhullar said the suspects first created a fake account on OLX and introduced themselves to gullible buyers as armed forces officials. To gain the confidence of gullible people, the suspects posted photos with uniform along with senior officers, he said.

The SSP said a team, headed by Rupinder Kaur Sohi, DSP (Cyber Crime), was constituted after registering a case at the Dhakoli police station on March 6 against unidentified persons under Section 419, 465, 468, 471, 420 and 120 of the IPC and  66D of the IT Act.
