Panchkula, February 28

The constant to-and-fro movement of Congress legislators of Himachal Pradesh in and out of Panchkula amid the hill state’s political slugfest kept the district police on their toes on Wednesday. The matter raised questions on the state government’s use of police force as well.

Senior police officials in the district failed to comment on the matter while sources in the department said officials were deputed with the legislators in civil clothes.

High drama continues

  • High drama continued in the city in view of the arrival and exit of the MLAs. After they exited the PWD Rest House in Sector 1 here on Tuesday evening, the lawmakers stayed-put at a hotel in Sector 3 of Panchkula. They were supposed to leave for Himachal Pradesh on Thursday morning.
  • Later, two helicopters were arranged to ferry them to reach the Himachal Pradesh Assembly. They attended the session. The lawmakers again disembarked at Tau Devi Lal Stadium on Thursday evening, without saying a word to the querying journalists outside.

A police officer on condition of anonymity said, “Some police officers have been deputed with the Himachal legislators in plain clothes. We can’t comment on the number of police personnel who have been given the task of ensuring their security.” Tarun Bhandari, Publicity Advisor to Haryana Government, was also seen meeting the legislators at Tau Devi Lal Stadium and Lalit Hotel in Sector 13, Chandigarh.
