Inadequate parking facilities

IN the absence of adequate parking facilities in markets of Sectors 63, 64 and 65 of Mohali, commuters park their vehicles on either side of road. Therefore, driving from Sector 63 to 65 becomes a nightmare. In the absence of traffic cops, traffic signal violators further add to the woes of commuters. For the safety and convenience of the public , multilevel parking be planned, till then roads from Amb Sahib to Sector 65 and from Bawa White House light point to Sec 69/70 crossing be notified one way.

Senior citizens need preferential treatment

THIS is in reference to a news item, ‘Nod for queue-management system at PGIMER’. This will help streamline the system where patients will be provided with a token during registration for various services. The number will appear on display screens placed outside doctors’ rooms, which will help a person know the estimated waiting time. The proposal should be welcomed by one and all as at present, patients do not know how much time they will have to wait for their turn to be examined by the doctor concerned. Though the government has formulated different policies for old age persons at the PGI, around 89 per cent of the elderly are not covered under any post-retirement economic and social security schemes. Almost 90 per cent of older persons are from the unorganised sector with no social security. Senior citizens are given priority during registration in hospitals, but after registration, they again have to stand in serpentine queues and most of them are not in a position to either stand or sit continuously for hours. The authorities should consider giving priority to old persons on compassionate grounds.

Lack of rain preparedness

THERE is no doubt that monsoon brought some relief from scorching heat, but at the same time, it once again exposed lack of preparedness on the part of MC authorities. Several problems such as roads caving in, water entering into residential and commercial areas and many areas going powerless are causing lot of inconvenience to the public. People travelling from Chandigarh to Zirakpur, Kharar and Panchkula are facing a tough time because of unending traffic jams, potholed roads and road diversions. There has to be effective traffic management during rain as traffic movement becomes slow during this time. Maintenance of roads should be carried out well in advance before the arrival of monsoon.
