Chandigarh: A man reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his house in Sector 44 on Tuesday.



Chandigarh: A man reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his house in Sector 44 on Tuesday. Sources said the victim, Ashwani Kumar (62), used a rope to hang himself from a ceiling fan. The police received information regarding the incident around 3 pm. A PCR vehicle reached the spot and rushed the victim to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, where doctors declared him brought dead. The police have initiated inquest proceedings at the Sector 34 police station.  TNS

Workshop on IIP at MCM

Chandigarh: The Institute Innovation Council (IIC) of MCM DAV College for Women organised a workshop on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). Gurmeet Kaur Nanda, Principal Associate (Patents), IIPRD, and Khurana & Khurana Advocates and IP Attorneys gave the audience of more than 500 a lowdown on various aspects of intellectual property, its significance and protection. He also traced the evolution of IP and dwelt upon various forms of IPs (Patent, copyright, trademarks, etc.), procedure for protecting IP, laws governing IPs and their scope. TNS

CGC represents India in Sri Lanka

Chandigarh: Medhavi Tomar, a computer science engineering student of Chandigarh Group of Colleges, Landran, was the only cadet from Punjab, Haryana, HP and Chandigarh, who was a part of the NCC team that represented India in an NCC Youth Exchange Programme (YEP) in Sri Lanka. She also won the NCC's All India Best Cadet award in the senior wing. YEP is an annual, country-to-country exchange of cadets belonging to NCC or equivalent organisations of 11 friendly nations conducted by the NCC. Medhavi said, "It was a great confidence booster and was an excellent exercise in shaping our interpersonal and communication skills.” TNS

Talk on emotional intelligence

Ambala: Former IAS officer and motivational speaker, Vivek Atray, delivered a lecture on 'Emotional intelligence and balance making' under the faculty development programme at SA Jain College in Ambala City on Tuesday. He gave tips to the students regarding career and stress management. He also referred to many famous personalities and shared various anecdotes while interacting with the faculty and the students. Principal Dr Abha Bansal motivated the students to make the best of the opportunity. TNS

Gharuan College wins debate contest

Kharar: Chandigarh Polytechnic College, Gharuan,  hosted a debate competition on 'Energy conservation and energy efficiency'. The aim was to create awareness regarding energy conservation and offer students a platform to nurture their analytical and presentation skills. 

Mehul Narang from Thapar Polytechnic College won the first position, while Vishakha Saini and Arjun Mahato from LPU bagged the second and the third positions, respectively. Cash prize, along with trophy and certificates, were awarded to the winners. OC

Youth nabbed with heroin

Chandigarh: A 22-year-old youth was arrested by the Chandigarh Police on Tuesday with 38 gm of heroin. The suspect has been identified as Deepak, a native of Uttar Pradesh. He was arrested from Mauli Jagran. Deepak is a history-sheeter. Ten cases of robbery, attempt to murder and under the Arms Act have already been registered against him at the Charthawal police station, Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh. The suspect will be produced in a court on Wednesday. TNS

One held in  drug case 

Chandigarh: One person has been arrested by the UT police while possessing 10 grams of heroin. According to the police, the suspect, identified as Hardeep Singh, alias Babby, a resident of Sector 56, was arrested near the road separating Sector 31 and 47. A case has been registered in this connection under the NDPS Act at the Sector 31 police station. The police have begun an investigation into the case. TNS   

Sandhu helps Redbacks win

Panchkula: Redbacks defeated Technocrat by 32 runs in a Challenger Corporate Trophy match here on Tuesday. Batting first, Redbacks managed 133/8 in 20 overs, with Gagan Sandhu (24) and Satnam Singh (20) making useful contributions to the total. Sumit Hooda claimed 3/10. In reply, Technocrat were bowled out for 101 runs in 17.4 overs. Jaswant made a 49, while Sumith Malik contributed 27 runs to the chase. Sandhu was the pick of the bowlers for Redbacks, claiming 4/14. Sahib took 3/25. TNS

Abhishek shines with bat

Chandigarh: Knight Fighters registered a seven-wicket win over Knight Fighters XI in a Champions Corporate Cricket League match here on Tuesday. Electing to bat, Knight Fighters were all out for 109 runs in 20 overs. Ravi Sharma (39) was the top scorer for the side. Deepinder Ohri claimed three wickets for Fighters XI, while Govind Sharma and Pradeep claimed two wickets each. In reply, Fighters XI rode on Abhishek’s unbeaten 51-run knock to reach in 17 overs. Vikas contributed 26 runs to the chase. Shailender bagged 2/20 for Knight Fighters. TNS
