Panchkula, April 19
A deep trench adjacent to the Maheshpur Road adjoining Yavnika Park in Sector 5 could result in a major accident any day. The ditch is approximately 10 feet wide and over 15 feet deep.
Residents of the city expressed disappointment at the condition of the site, which they said has been ignored by the administration for months.
Residents said the trench was on the underground storm water drainage pipe in the area, adding that it had been dug out months ago and has remained in the same condition since.
Death trap
The trench is 10-12 feet wide and could swallow a car easily. A slight twist or turn of a vehicle towards this ditch could be fatal for the occupants. It is almost 15 feet deep and is slowly breaking from the side of the road. The administration should act before a major incident takes place here. —Rocky Mittal, City Resident
Rocky Mittal, a resident who regularly visits Yavnika Park at Sector 5, said the deep trench requires immediate attention. “The trench is about 10 to 12 feet wide and could swallow a car easily. A slight twist or turn of a vehicle towards this ditch could be fatal for the occupants. It is almost 15 feet deep and is slowly breaking from the side of the road. The administration should act before a major incident takes place here,” he said.
Residents claimed there were a number of similar, though smaller, ditches in the city that needed immediate attention. “The ditches should be repaired in time, lest anyone be forced to act after a major incident takes place,” a passer-by said.
Municipal Corporation Commissioner Sachin Gupta said he has apprised the officials of the MC Engineering Branch of the matter and urged them for immediate action.
