Chandigarh: A national seminar on “Global challenges and contemporary education” was organised by the Bhartiya Shikshan Mandal, Chandigarh, at the Department of Evening Studies Multi Disciplinary Research Centre, Panjab University, on Sunday. The keynote speaker was Dr Bhagwati Parkash Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, Pacific University, Udaipur, Rajasthan. Dr Sharma deliberated on Indian education system in India. “We are the third largest education network in the world. In science and discovery, we have been surpassing all countries. However, we still have a long way to go,” he said. The event was presided over by Dr Pawan Kumar Singla, State Information Commissioner, Punjab, and the guest of honour was Prof Vinay Kapoor, State Information Commissioner, Punjab. TNS

PULEET entrance test

Chandigarh: As many as 86.99% candidates appeared in the PU Lateral Engineering Entrance Test (PULEET) conducted by Panjab University here on Sunday. Three centres were set up — two at Panjab University campus, Sector 14, and one at SSGPURC, Hoshiarpur.  TNS

1,085 take ISTC entrance exam

Chandigarh: As many as 1,085 candidates appeared in the entrance test for admission to 140 seats in the Indo-Swiss Training Centre (ISTC) held here on Sunday. A part of the Central Scientific Instruments Organisation, the ISTC offers diploma courses in electronics and mechanical engineering with an intake of 55 seats in each course and advanced diploma courses in mechatronics and industrial automation and die and mould making with an intake of 15 seats in each course. drug-free: Mazdoor Sena

Chandigarh: Mazdoor Sena held a function at Colony No. 4 to celebrate its foundation day here on Sunday. The function was presided over by the organisation president, Meghraj Verma. Dr Akshay Anand and area SHO JP Khan were the chief guests on the occasion. The function was addressed by many speakers, including the Mazdoor Sena chairman, Saurabh Joshi. Speakers put forth their views on improving health and living conditions of the poverty-stricken people on the occasion. The main objective of the organisation is social inclusion of backward sections of society. Besides, the Mazdoor Sena also intends to make Chandigarh, especially, surrounding colonies, drug-free. Speaking on the occasion, Saurabh Joshi said, “Our primary duty is to ensure that welfare schemes launched by the government reach each and every poor. We will take up cause of our poor brothers with the administration whenever the situation arises.” TNS

MC Commissioner takes stock of STP work at Maloya

Chandigarh: The Commissioner, Municipal Corporation (MC), Chandigarh, KK Yadav, visited the under construction sewage treatment plant (STP) in Maloya on Sunday. Superintending Engineer (SE), Public Health, Sanjay Arora and other officials concerned of the MC also accompanied him. Giving more details Arora said, “The 22.7 Mld capacity STP is based on sequential batch reactor (SBR) technology. The total expenditure for the construction of the STP will be 23.99 crore.”  “The plant will cater to sewage load of various villages and colonies, including Khuda Lahora, Khuda Jassu, Sarangpur, Dhanas, Dadumajra, Maloya, Gawala Colony and other areas,” he added. The Commissioner also inspected various structures and instructed officials and the agency to complete the work by September 30, which was fixed as its deadline. He asked the SE to keep a regular check on the work progress till its completion. TNS
