A 26-year-old Activa rider and an eight-year-old boy were killed, while three others were injured after a recklessly driven SUV hit the scooter before hitting a pedestrian and a rickshaw on the road separating Sector 32 and 33 this evening.
The speeding Tata Nexon, bearing a Punjab number and being driven by Dilpreet Singh (25), a resident of Faridkot, Punjab, first hit the Activa, being driven by Robin (26), from the rear side. Victims Rajwant Kaur (36) and her son Amrit (8), both residents of Pinjore, had taken a lift from the Activa rider and they were riding pillion. Rajwant was tossed into the air and fell on the windscreen of the SUV.
The SUV then hit a pedestrian, Shashi (32), a resident of Hallo Majra. The vehicle then hit a rickshaw, being ridden by Naseem, a resident of Sector 27, from the rear side.
The driver then drove it towards the pedestrian path.
Passersby rushed to the rescue of the injured and the police were informed. Two ambulances shifted the injured to the GMCH, Sector 32, where Robin and Amrit were declared brought dead.
The remaining three victims are undergoing treatment.
The SUV driver was nabbed from the spot and taken to the Sector 34 police station.
A case against the driver has been registered under Sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by an act endangering the life and personal safety of others) and 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder). The vehicle was impounded.
