The Chandigarh Beopar Mandal (CBM) has taken an initiative to promote cloth bags instead of single-use plastic bags in city markets.
CBM president Charanjiv Singh said they would create awareness among people to increase the use of cloth bags.
Jatinder Singh, president, Market Welfare Association, Sector 20-C, said nearly 3,000 cloth bags would be kept in all shops of the market to be provided to customers at a subsidised rate of Rs 15. The customer would be at the liberty to return it later and take a refund of Rs 15.
Charanjiv Singh said: “A delegation of the CBM held a meeting with Dr Vinay Mohan, MOH, Mohinder Pathak, Sandeep Dhanker and Gurmeet Singh, health supervisors, MC, to seek clarification about the banned single-use plastic items”.
It was clarified that 19 items of single-use plastic are banned as per the list released by the Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee.
