Cracking down on tipsy drivers, the UT traffic police have already issued 1,269 challans for drunken driving in the city.

According to the traffic police, 1,269 offenders have been booked for drunken driving till March 21.

Police officials said an intensified campaign had been carried out against drunken driving in the city since the beginning of the year.

Cops keep shifting the location of drunken driving nakas from time to time, which acts as a deterrent for people who drive under the influence of liquor.

The traffic police had issued 130 challans for drunken driving on Holi.

According to Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, a drunken driving offender shall be punishable for the first offence with imprisonment for a term which may extend up to six months or with a fine which may extend to Rs 2,000 or with both. In 2018, the police had issued 6,574 challans for drunken driving.

This year, 1,657 cases for suspension of driving licences have been recommended by the traffic police for various traffic offences.
