Setting another example of zero tolerance towards traffic violations in the city, the UT traffic police challaned a vehicle for speeding in which the vice-president of the city unit of the BJP was travelling. The challan was issued at a naka between the Airport light point and the Hallo Majra light point this afternoon.

The naka to check speeding by vehicles was set up outside the CRPF campus when a Breeza, bearing a Chandigarh number, in which BJP leader Ramveer Bhatti was travelling was stopped for speeding. The vehicle was being driven by a person accompanying the BJP leader.

The BJP leader reportedly called a police officer requesting him to direct the traffic staff present at the spot not to issue a challan. However, the officer did not talk to the cops present at the naka.

Ignoring all pleas, the sub-inspector concerned issued a challan for the offence.

The permitted speed limit on the road is 60 km per hour while the vehicle in which the BJP leader was travelling was being driven at 66 km per hour.

The police have taken a stern view of traffic violations in the city in the recent past.

Earlier this year, a Mahindra Thar belonging to Punjab MLA Satkar Kaur Gehri’s husband was impounded by the Chandigarh Traffic Police after it was found parked in a no-parking zone in Sector 34. Besides, the driver was not possessing the documents of the vehicle.

Last year, a Punjab and Haryana High Court vehicle was clamped for wrong parking. The Toyota Corolla was found parked in a no-parking area in Sector 34 after which it was clamped by traffic cops.
