Khanna, January 27
A four-year-old child of a migrant labourer died after being mauled by stray dogs at Bahomajra village near here last evening. The deceased has been identified as Viraj Kumar, son of Prem Chand.
The child’s sister and mother rushed for his help but couldn’t save him from the jaws of the dogs. Viraj came out of his house in the evening to play and reached near a waste dump. A pack of dogs attacked the child and started biting him all over the body.
In the meantime, his mother and sister rushed for his help. They managed to scare away the dogs but not before the canines had bitten the main parts of his body. The local residents gathered there and took the child to the Civil Hospital, Khanna. The doctors referred the child to Patiala but he died on the way. Although his parents again brought him to Civil Hospital, he was declared brought dead.
It seems the administration has learnt no lessons from the past. Anti-rabies injections are unavailable in the hospital.
Khanna SDM Sandeep Singh said he was not aware of the incident. He said he would inquire about the matter and direct the officials concerned to take necessary steps.
