The directions of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) to regulate the weight of school bags in accordance with teaching subjects have been hailed by residents.

The MHRD has asked the Education Department to formulate policies according to the instructions. It has also specified the weight of a school bag in accordance with Classes.

The directions also talks about no homework policies for students of Class I and Class II. The directions have also specified the subjects for particular classes.

Anjana Gupta, principal, DAV International School, said, “It is a good change. The ministry must have thought a lot about it. Heavy bags can often leave an impact on the physical development of the child.”

Varun Khanna, president, Amritsar Parents Welfare Association, said, “If the move is implemented, it will be for good for the students. But we will have to wait for any notification from the state government and its mood to understand the results of the MHRD directions.”

Sangeeta Singh, principal, Delhi Public School, said, “It is a brilliant move to reduce the weight of school bags. It is a new experiment to change the course for Classes I and II. Our school shall make an effort to increase general knowledge, besides following the directions of the ministry on teaching specified subjects.”
