Tarn Taran: A resident of Patti town, who was suspicious of his wife’s character, axed her to death on the night of Sunday and threw the body near the Railways track in Patti. SSP Dhruv Dahiya told mediapersons that Amarjit Singh Sonu (35) had been booked under Section 302 and 201 of the IPC by the Patti city police on a statement by deceased’s father, Balkar Singh of Nawan Killha village in Ferozepur. The deceased has been identified as Kiramdeep Kaur (32). She was married to Amarjit Singh in 2011. The SSP said the police had recovered the body and arrested the suspect. The axe used in the crime had also been recovered, said the SSP. Dahiya said a Special Investigation Team (SIT) with SP (Investigation) Jagjit Singh Walia, Patti DSP Kanwalpreet Singh and Patti SHO Balwinder Singh resolved the case. OC

Event dwells on iodised salt

Amritsar: An event to mark Global Iodine Disorder Prevention Day was organised at the office of Civil Surgeon Dr Hardeep Singh Ghai on Monday. Dr Ghai said iodine was a very important component of human diet and its deficiency could lead to various problems, including slow mental growth of children. There was a need to create awareness about the issue to help people improve their health by using iodised salt in their diet. The meeting was attended by senior medical officers, nodal officers, medical officers, LHVs and block extension educators. Dr Ghai said seminars in schools, colleges and residential areas would be organised to create awareness among residents. People would be encouraged to use salt containing iodine as it helped in preventing diseases as goiter. Iodine deficiency in a pregnant woman could lead to disorders in the child, he said. TNS
