Security beefed up in city as I-Day nears

Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal would unfurl the national flag to mark the 72nd Independence Day celebrations in the holy city.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kamaldeep Singh Sangha said the arrangements for the Independence Day celebrations had been completed while the full dress rehearsal would be conducted on August 13. He also visited the Guru Nanak Stadium and supervised the arrangements being made. Later, he held a meeting with officials of different departments in this connection.

He said personnel of the Punjab Police, Punjab Home Guards, NCC Cadet and NSS Scout units would be participating in the parade.

Meanwhile, the city police have made elaborate security arrangements while paramilitary forces and armed reserve police have been deputed in different parts of the city.

The entry and exit points of the city have been sealed and vehicles entering the city are being checked. Security around religious places, including Golden Temple and Durgiana Temple, has also been strengthened. Security has been beefed up at the railway station, bus stand and other prominent public places.

Cops in civvies have also been deployed. Besides, police officials have been directed to keep an eye on history-sheeters and anti-social elements. A vigil is also being kept at hotels and inns where people stay during their visit to the holy city. Hotel authorities have been asked not to allow any person stay on their premises without taking their identity cards.

Police Commissioner SS Srivastav said senior police officials were directed to remain in the field and check the checkpoints regularly. He said laxity would not be tolerated. Security has also been strengthened at Guru Nana Stadium where annual Independence Day celebrations will be organised, he added.

Meanwhile, the dog squad of the police was pressed into service for security check at the stadium on Thursday.
