Bathinda, December 3

To mark International Day of Disabled Persons, Central University of Punjab, Bathinda, organised a lecture on ‘Role of physiotherapy for differently-abled persons’.

The CUPB internal committee for persons with disabilities organised the lecture under the guidance of Vice-Chancellor RK Kohli. The resource person was Dr Aman Monga, HoD, physiotherapy department, Max Hospital, Bathinda. CUPB faculty, staff members and students from different departments also attended the lecture.

Dr Pardeep Kumar and Dr Antriksh Gupta, programme coordinators, welcomed the guests and introduced the resource persons to the participants.

Dr Aman Monga, in his keynote address, talked about different types of disability conditions. He said early detection of disability helped a physiotherapist to control the damage and better rehabilitation of the patient. Physiotherapy helped differently-abled persons maintain their quality of life to recover in case of temporary disability and reduce the damage to muscles in case of permanent disability.

He said physically-challenged persons had weak muscles due to lack of movement of particular body parts. Physiotherapy was recommended by experts to keep muscles strong, flexible, in alignment, and to check the progress of muscle degeneration. He said a regular physiotherapy programme for physically-challenged children would provide them with an opportunity to reach their optimal functional ability.

He shared various treatment methodologies like exercise for muscle strengthening, stretching, range of motion, relaxation, head and trunk control, sensory integration, and gross motor challenging. After the lecture session, Dr Monga interacted with participants and answered their queries. Shweta Arora, deputy registrar, proposed a vote of thanks at the end of the programme.
