Two youngsters were killed while one sustained serious injuries when their speeding car rammed into a tree at the Phase 7 Industrial Area during the wee hours of today.

The deceased have been identified as Yogesh Sharma (27), a native of Una, and Ravi Kant from Hamirpur. Their acquaintance, who sustained injuries in the incident, has been identified as Ankush (25) from Shimla. They were living in a rented accommodation at Phase 2 here.

According to the police, the speed of the victims’ i20 car was around 135 kmph when the incident occurred near a religious place on the road. “The incident occurred around 4.45 am. The car was being driven by Ankush, who apparently lost control over the vehicle and rammed it into a tree,” said Ram Darshan, in-charge of the Industrial Area police post here.

He said the trio was stuck in the mangled remains of the car and they were pulled out of the vehicle by the police with help of some passersby.

“The trio was taken to the Mohali Civil Hospital, where two of them were declared brought dead,” said the police, adding that Ankush was still unconscious.

Both deceased were working for an online shopping company, said the police. “Ankush is working in another private company,” said the police. “Ankush is still unconscious; so his statement is yet to be recorded,” said the police.

The police said kin of the victims had been informed. “Tomorrow, after a postmortem, the bodies of the deceased would be handed over to their families,” said the police, who have initiated inquest proceedings in the case at the Phase 1 police station.
