A 42-year-old man was arrested for allegedly murdering his wife by repeatedly hitting her head with a stick. A father of four, including two daughters, Gorakhlal Srivastava, a courier delivery man, attacked his wife following an argument at their residence in Balongi. The deceased has been identified as Anju Kumari (37). The family hails from Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh.

According to the SHO of the Balongi police station, Manphool Singh, no one else was inside the house when the incident took place. The couple’s 12-year-old daughter came down from the roof of the house when she saw her father leaving his room. She went in and saw her mother lying in a pool of blood following which she called neighbours.

The neighbours then called up the police and an ambulance. In the meantime, a private doctor, who lived nearby, examined her and informed the family and neighbours that Anju was dead. The police arrested Gorakhlal and recorded his daughter’s statement. Anju’s body has been kept in the mortuary.

Asked, the daughter told the police that the couple fought regularly. This afternoon, she had gone to the roof to put up clothes for drying. She heard her mother’s screams and went to the room.

Police sources said Gorakhlal suspected that his wife was having an affair and used to question her character. The police said this was corroborated by neighbours. Gorakhlal has been booked for murder. The police have recovered the murder weapon.
