One killed, 22 hurt as bus rams into truck

PATIALA:A 33-year-old man died and 22 others were injured after a speeding Punjab Roadways bus rammed into a truck on Banur-Chandigarh road here on Monday morning.

A 33-year-old man died and 22 others were injured after a speeding Punjab Roadways bus rammed into a truck on Banur-Chandigarh road here on Monday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Navdeep Singh, a resident of Ropar. He died during treatment at Max hospital in Mohali. The accident took place near Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital around 8 am.

The police said they had arrested the bus driver, Jagwinder Singh. The injured included four women, students and office-goers. 

The impact of the collision was so intense that almost half of the truck was blown into pieces. The speedometer of the bus, which was on its way from Chandigarh to Rajpura, was stuck at 95 km/hour when they checked it, the police said.

Two of the 22 injured were shifted to PGIMER, Chandigarh, where their condition was stated to be critical, while 17 were shifted to Neelam Hospital and Maternity Home in Rajpura and three were sent to AP Jain hospital for treatment.

Surinder Pal, station house officer at the Banur police station, said the bus overturned after the collision and the driver was driving rashly.

KK Panthey, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Rajpura, said all injured were out of danger. He said, “We have registered a case against the bus driver under Sections 304-A (causing death by negligence), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life), 427 (mischief) of the Indian Penal Code.”
