Protest over the increase in hostel fees at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi has now reached Punjabi University campus in the city. Students under the banner ‘Sanjha Vidyarthi Morcha’ organised a signature drive in support of JNU students and pasted posters outside Bhai Kahan Singh Nabha library today.
Students from groups including Democratic Students Organisation (DSO), Punjab Radical Student Union (PRSU), Punjab Student Union (PSU), Punjab Student Union (Lalkar), Students Federation of India (SFI) and All India Students Federation (AISF) took part in the drive. Students raised concerns over conditions of the education system in the country.
Students of the Punjab Radical Students’ Union (PRSU) said, “Education in the country is being privatised and commercialised, which is not good for students and society.”
Sandeep Kaur, one of the student leaders said, “While fee at institutes and universities is increased day-in and day-out, big corporate houses are given major tax exemption. The fee increment at the JNU is a way of privatisation of education in the whole country.”
