Patiala, May 21

The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has taken an initiative to improve the water quality of Patiala Nadi (rivulet). The PPCB has installed two paddle aerators in the rivulet.

Lavneet Dubey, Environmental Engineer, said during analysis of the water quality of the rivulet, dissolved oxygen was found negligible which may be a major concern for deteriorating water quality.

SS Marwaha, chairman, PPCB, gave a scientific solution to this problem by proposing to install paddle aerators which would be operating all the time and lead to increase in the dissolved oxygen concentration. Hence, it would improve the water quality of Patiala Nadi.

Three industries located in the catchment area of Patiala Nadi, including M/s Vishal Coaters Pvt Ltd, Khursropur village, Patiala; M/s DSG Paper Pvt Ltd, Bhanri village, Patiala; and M/s Patiala Distillers and Mfrs (P) Ltd, Patiala; were approached to give the scientific idea a practical shape.

The paddle aerators installed in Patiala Nadi at Saparheri village were inaugurated by the PPCB chairman. On the occasion, Marwaha said such scientific ideas, if given a practical shape, shall help to improve the environment. He lauded Dubey, his team and the industries which came forward to implement the pilot project.

He said water quality of Patiala Nadi would be monitored to know the impact of these paddle aerators. After this pilot study, the project should be replicated in Buddha Nullah, East Bein and other water bodies, he said.
