CHANDIGARH: A gold brick, weighing 1.5 kg and and worth around Rs 43 lakh, was found in a seat of a Dubai flight at the international airport here on Friday.



Chandigarh: A gold brick, weighing 1.5 kg and and worth around Rs 43 lakh, was found in a seat of a Dubai flight at the international airport here on Friday. The brick was inside the back rest of the seat where a cavity had been created for the purpose. However, the gold is unclaimed and thus no arrest has been made. Customs officials said the airline informed them about the gold brick. TNS

Woman killed in hit-and-run

Panchkula: In a hit-and-run accident, a 45-year-old woman, a resident of Ambala, was killed on Thursday night while her husband, who was riding a motorcycle, sustained injuries near Manakya village in Panchkula district after a vehicle hit them. According to a complaint lodged by the victim’s husband, Brij Bhushan, who works in a factory near Chandimandir, he and his wife, Shama Rani, were going back home around 11 pm when they were hit by a rashly driven vehicle near Manakya village. A case has been registered. TNS

Malaria count reaches 22

Chandigarh: A 42-year-old resident of Maloya Colony was tested positive for malaria, taking the total to 22 in the city. His is being treated and is stable now. According to the Health Department, 18 cases of dengue, 22 of malaria and two of chikungunya have been reported in the city. Officials said they were offering free dengue testing facility at the Department of Virology, PGIMER; Department of Microbiology, GMCH-32 and GMSH-16, and the District Priority Lab (IDSP), Civil Hospital, Mani Majra. One held with injections 

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Police arrested one person with 25 banned injections. According to the police, Bhupinder Singh, a resident of Sector 52, was nabbed by a team of the crime branch from near Government High School, Sector 52. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered at the Sector 36 police station. TNS

Minor abducted, case lodged 

Kharar: The Kharar Sadar police have registered a case against unidentified persons for allegedly abducting a 15-year-old girl of a nearby village under Sections 363 and 366A of the IPC. The father of the girl, who originally belongs to Madhya Pradesh, told the police that he was running a tea shop in the village. He went to the city to buy some goods and left the girl at the tea shop. When he returned back, the girl was not there. The Kharar Sadar police have registered a case of abduction against unidentified accused and started the investigation. OC

Bomb shells found

Chandigarh: Panic gripped residents of Khuda Ali Sher village when three bomb shells were found during the construction of a gurdwara there on Friday evening. The police was informed about the incident at 8 pm after which the police reached the spot.The bomb shells were recovered during digging at the construction site. A bomb disposal team of the UT police was rushed to the spot and bomb shells were shifted to a safer place and covered with sand bags. The Army was informed for further identification and technical inspection.Senior police officials also reached the spot to take a stock of the situation. TNS

Fire at Sector 17 shop   

Chandigarh: A tragedy was averted in the  afternoon  after a fire broke out in the basement of SCO  65  in  Sector  17.  The fire and emergency wing of the Municipal Corporation received a call in the   afternoon   about the fire in the basement. Fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the  fire was  controlled  within 15 minutes. Lal  Bahadur, sub-fire officer, said the  there were  some  goods  stored in the   basement. Firefighters controlled the fire immediately  after reaching   the  spot.TNS     

Girl dies of snakebite

Ropar: A 12-year-old girl died reportedly of snake bite at nearby Bhaini village on Thursday. The deceased was identified as Yashoda. She was a student of Class V in an elementary school of the village. According to the local SHO Des Raj, the girl had gone to her school in the morning when teachers noticed swelling on her hand and sent her back following which her parents took her to the government hospital at Singh village. Doctors at the hospital referred her to the Ropar Civil Hospital, he said. She died on way to the hospital, he added. It was apprehended that she was bitten by a snake, he said. The body was handed over to  relatives of the deceased after conducting a postmortem examination, the SHO added. TNS

Hit by vehicle, teacher dies 

Zirkapur: In yet another hit-and-run case, a 41-year-old schoolteacher was killed after he was allegedly hit by an unidentified vehicle while crossing the road near Zirakpur. The deceased has been identified as Dinesh Kumar, a resident of Shimla. According to the police, Dinesh, along with his friend Kamlesh, a fruit dealer, had come to Zirakpur for some work on Thursday. The police said on Friday morning, after checking out from the hotel, Dinesh and his friend were crossing the road when a rashly driven vehicle hit Dinesh and dragged him to some distance. Dinesh died on the spot. The Dhakoli police have registered a case in this regard. oc

3 booked for thrashing man

Kharar: The Kharar Sadar Police have registered a case under Sections 452, 323, 341, 506 and 34 of the IPC  against Harkam Singh, Harnek Singh and Billa, all residents of Dharak Kalan village, on the charge of badly thrashing Karamjit Singh, also a resident of the same village. The complainant stated to the police that on Thursday night he was sitting in his house when the accused barged in and beat him up severely. The Majat police post in charge, ASI Nidhan Singh, said the accused were yet to be arrested. oc

Gang of three thieves busted

Ropar: The district police has claimed to have solved the case of theft of mobile phones worth Rs 5 lakh after arresting Gurdeep Singh, a resident of Barsalpur village, near Chamkaur Sahib, here on Friday. Two of his accomplices were, however, still at large, said the police. It was on July 26 when mobile phone sets and other articles worth Rs 5 lakh were stolen from a shop at Chamkaur Sahib. When Manpreet Singh Multani opened his shop in the morning, he found that its back side wall was damaged. One of the close circuit TV cameras installed in the shop was also smashed by burglars. The shopkeeper told the police that 60 mobile phones, one lap top and other items were missing from his shop. The Ropar SSP, Swapan Sharma, said besides stolen mobile phones a motorcycle, one LED and tools used for burglary were recovered from accused Gurdip Singh. His two accomplices identified as Ajit Singh and Pamma were yet to be arrested, he added. TNS

3 students booked for assault

Kharar: The Majat police post under the Kharar Sadar police station has booked three students identified as Sunny, Ajay Kumar and Surinder on the charge of assaulting Gurvinder Singh, a Class XI student of Government School, Majatri. The complainant, Gurvinder Singh, a resident of Dharak village, told the police that he left for his school in the morning on Thursday. On the way, the three accused came on their bikes and stopped him. They took him to a deserted place and beat him up badly. When Gurvinder fell unconscious, the accused threw him in bushes near the road. When the victim gained consciousness, he informed his father, and was taken to the PGI, Chandigarh, for treatment. The Majat police post in charge, ASI Nidhan Singh, said a case under Sections 365, 323, 341, 506 and 34, IPC, was registered against Sunny, Ajay and Surinder. He said an old dispute between the victim and the accused was the reason behind the assault. The three accused were absconding, he added. OC

1 killed, another hurt in mishap   

Ropar: One person was killed while another was injured seriously when their car hit a truck parked near Nirankari Bhawan in the late evening here on Thursday. The deceased has been identified as Jaswant Singh, alias Kala, of nearby Alipur village. The injured Rajinder Singh, alias Chhaju, of Malikpur village, was admitted to the local Civil Hospital. According to information the victims were returning from Machhiwara when their car hit a truck parked on the service road, near Nirankari Bhawan, at 10 pm. Passersby took both to the hospital where doctors declared Jaswant brought dead. The police said a case had been registered against the truck driver in this connection. TNS

Mohali: A Samrala man was arrested on Friday with 30 gram of heroin. The accused has been identified as Rajbir Singh. He was arrested from near the Kumbra light point. — TNS

Man arrested for molesting woman

Dera Bassi: The Dera Bassi police here on Friday arrested a resident of Bihar on the charges of outraging a modesty of a woman and threatening her. The 35-year-old victim had lodged a complaint with Dera Bassi police station following which a case was registered and the police arrested the accused. The accused has been identified as Vinod Yadav, a construction supervisor. — OC
