An ASI of the UT police has been held guilty in a corruption case. The quantum of punishment will be pronounced on Monday.
The court of Special Judge (CBI) Dr Sushil Kumar Garg held ASI Davinder Kumar guilty under Sections 7 and 13 (2) read with Section 13 (1) (D) of the Prevention of Corruption Act,1988.
According to the prosecution, in a complaint to the CBI on May 21, 2013, Amandeep Singh had stated that he had visited a shop and bought some snacks, for which he gave a Rs 500 note to the shopkeeper. The shopkeeper said the note was fake and asked for his voter ID card and called up the police.
Amandeep stated that the SHO of the Sector 19 police station came to the spot and the shopkeeper handed over the note and the voter ID card to the cop. Amandeep was taken to the police station where ASI Davinder Sharma interrogated him and asked about the fake currency note.
The complainant told him that he had no knowledge about the fake currency, following which the ASI asked him to visit the police station next evening and collect his voter ID card.
The next day, the ASI told Amandeep that he had conducted a verification and found the note fake. The cop threatened him that he would land in jail for 10 years for keeping fake currency. He also abused Amandeep and demanded Rs 5,000 for settling the matter. Following this, Amandeep approached the CBI. The complainant was asked to bargain the bribe amount. A trap was laid on May 29, 2013, and the ASI was arrested while accepting a bribe of Rs 3,500.
