Former Prime Minister (PM) Inder Kumar Gujral was remembered during two events organised in connection with his birth centenary today.

A ceremony was held in the honour of the 12th PM of the country at IK Gujral Punjab Technical University (IKGPTU).

“He had an influence not only among Indian politicians but also in the whole world. Politicians from the southern countries were always eager to meet him and to hear Gujral. He was a supporter of a series of historic rich relationship era in which neighbouring countries or riyasats which neighbouring countries or riyasats were asked to live in a favourable and better relationship with their neighbours, as this policy gave them more progress. If we have good relations with neighbouring countries, we can progress further by using their resources and sharing our resources with them”, said veteran journalist Satnam Singh Manak, who had worked closely with Gujral. Manak said Gujral was in favour of human rights and organisation of journalists.

Prof Ajay Kumar Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, IKGPTU, said for those who are interested in subjects related to foreign policies or relations with neighbouring countries, “Gujral doctrine” is still the favourite subject of research. He said: “It is a matter of honour for the university that its name is on the name of the former PM. Gujral was a true leader, a loyal and patriotic person person. He saluted him on the occasion.

Surinder Saini, who is running an organisation ‘Child Helpline’ in Jalandhar and was close to Gujral, told about his association with the former PM. The life introduction of Gujral was read by Dr Balkar Singh, Dean, Academic, IKGPTU.

Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner (DC) Varinder Kumar Sharma today joined the distinguished people from all walks to pay floral tributes to the former PM at a function held in DAV Institute of Engineering and Technology here. The DC was accompanied by veteran journalists Irwin Khanna and Deepak Jalandhari.

Khanna described the former PM as a true patriot, an eminent statesman, administrator and distinguished Parliamentarian besides being a fine human being with the rare qualities of head and heart. He said Gujral had the distinction of being the first PM from the state. He said the former PM would be ever remembered for his contribution in the progress of the state and prosperity of its people, adding that he was a votary of idealism and morality in politics.

Jalandhari said initiatives in fostering goodwill, trust, peace and amity in Indian subcontinent, especially in strengthening Indo-Pak relations, would ever be remembered by one and all. Being a multifaceted personality. Gujral was an institution in himself. He had the regard and passion for Punjabi culture, language and literature, adding that he was a true votary of Punjab, Punjabi and Punjabiat.
