Ludhiana, August 13

Family and relatives of the tea vendor, who committed suicide at his home on Saturday night, staged a protest at Bhaiwala Chowk on Monday and sought immediate arrest of the landlord of the victim’s shop for abetting the suicide. They kept the vendor’s body at the venue for the protest and raised slogans against the Police Department.

A police team, led by ADCP Gurpreet Kaur Purewal, reached the spot and spoke to the protesters. They called off the protest after the police officials assured them that the accused would be arrested soon. Later, the family cremated the body.

Praveen Dogra, who ran a tea shop at Bhaiwala Chowk, committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his home in the South Model Gram area on Saturday night. The police recovered a suicide note from his pocket in which he has accused the owner of his shop of driving him to this extreme step. The police have registered a case under Section 306 of the IPC against landlord Sukhcharanjit Singh of the Sarabha Nagar area.

Meanwhile, the victim’s brother, Rajinder said: “The police have failed to arrest the accused even two days after the incident. They assured us that the landlord would be arrested soon, following which we called off the protest and cremated the body.”
