Sharad Malhotra, who portrays the historical character Bakshi Jagabandhu in Vidrohi, talks about the role & more

From Maharana Pratap to Bakshi Jagabandhu, how has the journey been for you as an actor?

Maharana Pratap was my first historical show; it helped me learn a lot about our glorious history. It made me study things all over again. Before that people knew me as a romantic hero, but the show changed that perception of the viewers. The entire look, with the moustache and all, gave a different feel to my personality.

What made you choose the role in Vidrohi?

Whenever I get an offer, the first thing I see is how different the role is from my last one, as I always want to do something new every time. So, when I heard about Vidrohi and Bakshi Jagabandhu, and the first people’s revolt that happened in the country, I instantly liked the story and said yes to the show.

What were your preparations for the role of Bakshi Jagadbandhu?

To play Bakshi Jagadbandhu, who was a legendary warrior from Odisha, I had to learn an Odia martial art form. Those who have heard about Paika Bidroha would know that it is a group of people that he formed during 1817, when the first revolt happened in India. Paika is basically the army that fought the British. They were very good at martial arts. It was not easy; was physically as well as emotionally very exhausting.

What are the major similarities you have with Bakshi Jagabandhu?

I can’t even think of comparing myself with a legend like him. All I can say is that I am also patriotic. I love my motherland. Like him, I also have this tendency of not giving up on something and keep trying till the end.

How do you juggle between personal and professional lives?

It’s been years now, and as far as I can remember things were not easy initially. But gradually one learns how to maintain balance.

What were your plans before you entered the field of acting?

I played cricket during my initial days and was pursuing it with all my heart. I also thought of playing professionally, but life had other plans. I didn’t intentionally want to get into showbiz. Whatever happens, happens for the best.

What was your first job and first pay check?

My first job was that of a financial advisor. I was working as an intern, but earned whenever I brought business. My mother was my first client and I had got a commission of Rs 8,000 at that time. This was about 18-19 years back. And like a good boy, I gave it back to my mother. I remember we all went out for dinner and a movie. It was a great time.
