Two of the four cab robbers arrested here yesterday have turned out to be the registered Uber drivers.

Police said the duo operated two Swift Dzire cars as Uber taxis during the day. At night, they would move around in the cars, especially near the expressway, posing as shared taxi service operators to Delhi and pick up their victims. “They later used to rob unsuspecting travellers at gunpoint.”

The accused have confessed to have committed 15 robberies in two months. The police, however, suspect the number could be more. A notice has been sent to Uber to strengthen its verification  process and keep a regular eye on drivers affiliated with it. According to the crime branch, all four accused belonged to Mewat. They were identified as Sahil Hussain (21); Shahid, alias Saddam, (22); Sajid (20); and Sahil (24). “The accused would ask people waiting for transport as to where they wanted to go.

Telling their victim that the cab was also going there, they would make him sit in the middle on the rear seat while two of them would occupy the window seats. Finding an opportunity, they would overpower and rob him of all valuables,” said Inspector Narender Chauhan. They would also snatch debit/credit cards of their victims and make them reveal the PIN at gunpoint and then make ATM withdrawals.
