Civil hospitals to run PG medical courses

Postgraduate medical courses in different specialties will now be run at district civil hospitals, in addition to railway hospitals, ESI hospitals and other government-run and private hospitals, to meet the shortage of specialists.

Civil hospitals in eight districts have moved proposals with the National Board of Examinations to start the courses in various specialties.

“The underlying idea is to utilise the full potential of government-run and private hospitals to provide specialised medical education, apart from providing healthcare facilities,” said Dr Vinod K Paul, Chairman, Board of Governors, in supersession of the Medical Council of India and Member, NITI Aayog.

Dr Paul was in Rohtak on Saturday to chair a national symposium on ‘Shortage of Trained Specialist Medical Manpower in India – Possible Solutions’ organised by Pt Bhagwat Dayal Sharma University of Health Sciences.

He said they planned to double the number of seats of postgraduate medical courses in the country in the next five years. Amit Jha, Additional Chief Secretary, Medical Education and Research, said the courses were proposed to be started in Panchkula, Faridabad, Gurugram, Ambala, Sonepat, Kaithal, Hisar and Bahadurgarh.
