Karnal, May 28

Three miscreants opened fire on a police team at the new bus stand in Karnal today and managed to free from custody a dacoity case convict being taken back from court.

Two police personnel, who received bullet injuries in the incident, were rushed to the hospital, where their condition was stated to be stable.

The convict was identified as 23-year-old Sunil, alias Kheera, of Bahadad village in Panipat. At present, he resides in Karan Vihar here.

Sunil is facing one case each of dacoity, murder and under the NDPS Act, besides two cases of looting.

Yamunanagar police Sub-Inspector Suresh Pal and Constables Sandeep and Vinod had brought Sunil to a Karnal court for hearing in connection with a murder case registered at the Sadar police station in 2016.

The incident took place around 1 pm, while Sunil was being taken back to Yamunanagar and the officials, along with the convict, were waiting for the bus. Of the three policemen, only Vinod had a weapon. The miscreants targeted him with pepper spray and opened fire at  Suresh Pal and Sandeep.

Director General of Police Manoj Yadav has announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh for any information leading to the arrest of criminals. Seven teams have been formed to arrest Sunil and his aides, the police said, adding it was a well-planned attack. The CCTV cameras installed at the bus stand were not functional.
