SIT begins probe into suicide by SC youth in police custody

The suicide by a youth from the Scheduled Caste (SC) in the city police post eight days ago will now be investigated by the State Crime Branch (SCB).

PK Agarwal, DGP (Crime), has formed a three-member Special Investigation Team led by SP (SCB) Sangeeta Kalia to probe the case.

On getting the orders, Sangeeta Kalia today initiated inquiry with immediate effect and reached Jhajjar to visit the scene of the incident.

She not only questioned the policemen on duty about the case but also interacted with the kin of deceased youth Rajesh of Radha Swami Colony here.

Rajesh, an e-rickshaw driver, reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan by using the wire of an air cooler in the city police post on November 27. He was brought there by an elderly man, Vishnu, in connection with a case of his grandson.

Sangeeta Kalia reached the city police post where Station House Officer (SHO) Seema told her about the incident. The SP then inspected the room where Rajesh took the extreme step.

“When Sangeeta Kalia asked the policemen on duty if anyone saw Rajesh going to the room, everyone said no. Later, she met Rajesh’s mother Krishna at the rest house and got information about the incident. Krishna told Kalia that her son could not have committed suicide. She alleged he had been killed and she wants action against the guilty,” said sources.

Later talking to the media, Sangeeta Kalia said that as it was the first day of inquiry, preliminary information about the incident had been collected by interacting with the victim’s family and policemen. The file of the case is yet to be received.

“Every policeman on duty at the time of the incident and those others associated with the case will be questioned. The CCTV footage will be analysed to corroborate the sequence of events,” she said.
