Excise Department seizes 28 trucks, realises GST

Una, November 20

The flying squad of the State Excise and Taxation department seized 28 trucks that were illegally transporting iron scrap to a steel reinforcement bars manufacturing unit in Una. The Joint Commissioner of the Central Enforcement Zone, Rakesh Bharatiya, said the scrap was mostly from Punjab, though some vehicles were also coming from within the state. Bharatiya, who was in Gagret to lead the campaign, said while 15 of the 28 vehicles did not have any type of bills for the material they were transporting, the remaining 13 did not possess e-way bills. He said the checking continued throughout Thursday night.

The Joint Commissioner, whose jurisdiction includes Una, Hamirpur and Bilaspur districts, informed that the consolidated cost of the material being transported was assessed at Rs 84 lakh and the GST, along with penalty, was calculated at Rs 33.38 lakh. He said by Friday, the tax evaders had deposited the amount to the department. Bharatiya said the detection has a statewide implication against a nexus and was the single largest seizure of the material during a single night. — OC
