Dharamsala, July 28
Traffic was blocked on the Kangra-Ranital national highway for about an hour this afternoon following a landslide.
Locals and tourists were stranded in a traffic jam. They criticised the police for not making adequate arrangements to deal with the situation arising out of the landslide. No policeman was there to divert and manage traffic. Locals used a small road passing through old Kangra to escape the jam. However, many commercial vehicles also followed them on the old Kangra road, which also got chocked soon.
The national highway passing nearby the old Kangra area is prone to landslides as it was cut for widening during the monsoon.
Earlier, the Public Works Department (PWD) used to clear unsafe patches on the highway along mountains that are prone to landslides. Sources said that the exercise was not carried out this year.
