Mandi, July 10

Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar today inaugurated the Sub-Junior National Wushu Championship 2022 at Paddal stadium in Mandi. The event is being organised jointly by Wushu Association of India and Himachal Pradesh Wushu Association.

As many as 1,300 players from 33 states and union territories are participating in the five-day championship. Addressing the audience, Governor said there was a need to promote Wushu. Besides improving physical ability, the game also develops a sense of discipline, he added.

The Governor said that the Union Government was trying to get the sport included in the Olympics.

Welcoming all the Wushu players from across the country to Himachal, Dr Malika Nadda, President, Special Olympics India said that few people were aware about the sport. “Four Wushu players have been awarded with the Arjuna Award while one coach has won the Dronacharya Award,” she added.

Nadda said the sport was being promoted in a big way in the state and the country, and was also being encouraged through ‘Khelo India’.

She urged the state government to construct a stadium for the players of Paralympic so that they could get proper place to enhance their talent.

Earlier, Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the organising committee Arindam Chaudhary honoured the Governor by presenting Himachali Cap and Shawl on the occasion.

Chairman of Mandi Zila Parishad, Pal Verma, CEO of the Indian Wushu Association, Suhel Ahmed, and Coordinator North Zone Wushu Federation of India, Sudershan, were also present on the occasion.
