Two persons allegedly committed suicide due to economic distress perpetuated by Covid-19 in Kangra today.

Jaswant Singh (52), a resident of Jawali, who was working at a local petrol station, committed suicide under economic distress. Sources said that he had fixed the marriage of his daughter for November. However, his income had gone down considerably during the lockdown and under duress, he took the extreme step.

Taxi driver Kulwant Singh, a resident of Jaisinghpur, also ended his life at his house reportedly under economic distress.

He had bought a car on loan and used to run it as taxi in Delhi. Due to the lockdown, he lost his source of livelihood and returned to his village. Recently, he received a bank notice for the repayment of the loan. However, he was not in a position to repay the loan and allegedly committed suicide. The police have registered cases of suicide.

Meanwhile, in some respite, 143 new cases were detected today, taking the case tally to 12,581. With five deaths being reported in the state, fatality figure rose to 129. Vinod Kumar, BJP MLA from Nachan in Mandi, was also found Covid positive.

3 die of infection in Mandi

Three Covid patients died at Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Government Medical College and Hospital at Nerchowk in Mandi district. They were identified as Savitri Devi (60) of Purani Mandi; Mangaru Ram (64) of Chapad village of Seraj in Mandi district and Mast Ram (77) of Jangali in Hamirpur district.

According to the district health authorities, all three patients were in the isolation ward of the medical college.

5 BSFjawans +ve in Kangra

Twenty-four persons, including five BSF jawans, tested positive for coronavirus in Kangra on Tuesday. Three residents of Kuther village were also among the infected.

79 cases in Sirmaur

Seventy-nine cases were detected in Sirmaur district on Tuesday. A 75-year-old person from Paonta Sahib, who tested positive for Covid, died at Nahan medical college last night. Thirtyeight persons tested positive in Solan district. A bank employee from the SBI Solan, a staffer from income tax office at Solan and an Army man were among those who tested positive.
