Solan, November 27

Villagers of the Ladhighat area of Shillai in Sirmaur district today demanded a special investigation team to look into the death of social activist Vinita Thakur, who was allegedly set ablaze by a police constable at Nahan on November 9.

Thakur, who had suffered more than 65 per cent burn injuries, had succumbed to her injuries on November 21 at the PGI in Chandigarh.

The police had arrested the accused constable, Suryakant, on November 11 after registration of an attempt to murder case. The accused had allegedly used petrol to burn Thakur who had gone to meet him at a rented accommodation.

He had then arranged a vehicle to ferry her to the hospital and had also suffered some burn injuries on his hands and face.

The police had also recovered a can of petrol from the spot.

Residents of the Ladhighat area, who constituted a Vinita Nayay Manch in the case, today took out a rally and demanded immediate justice for the victim.

The protesters said the chargesheet in the case should be made public and the accused should be hanged.

Thy said several cases had come to light in the state wherein the victim was denied justice like the Gudiya case, Hoshiar murder case etc.

The emergence of such cases has led to the erosion of their faith in the state government, the villagers lamented.
