Jammu, February 22

A construction worker was hit by a landslide outside his company headquarters near Seri in Ramban district, the police said. Identified as Deshpaul, the victim hailed from Uttar Pradesh. He was going towards the mess of the company for breakfast when the incident occurred, officials said. Meanwhile, an Army unit rescued 81 students and staff members of a college from Banihal area of Ramban due to the closure of the Jammu-Srinagar highway. The road has been blocked due to landslides and shooting stones at many places for the past four days. Army received information that seven staffers and 74 students of the Law College of Mohanlal Sukhadia University, Udaipur, Rajasthan, were stranded in Banihal area.

“Seven university staff and 74 students were rescued,” said the Army spokesperson based in Jammu.

At the same time, the work to clear the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) continued for the fourth consecutive day as the movement of regular traffic remained suspended on the vital road that links the Valley with the rest of the country. Only the stranded vehicles were allowed to proceed after partial restoration of the road. Heavy rain and snowfall had recently triggered heavy landslides, blocking the 270-km highway between Nashri to Banihal.

The traffic police stated that the NH-44 was partially restored for single way.
