The Commissioner of Police has formulated a strategy to curb the menace of drugs by entrusting the work of arresting 45 identified drug peddlers/ proclaimed offenders (POs) and parole jumpers under the NDPS Act to each senior officer of the force.

As per the strategy, 45 senior officers of the Commissionerate, including 29 Gazetted Officers (GOs), have been given the task of arresting these 45 dreaded criminals to ensure that the scourge of drug was completely eliminated from the district.

Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar has given the task of arresting these 45 criminals to each of these 45 officers. These officers have been asked to accomplish the task in a professional and time-bound manner, so that the criminals could be arrested.

The Commissioner said the move was aimed at giving a final blow to drug peddlers and the curse of drugs in the district. He said: “Each officer will be made accountable for arresting these offenders against whom cases have been registered under the NDPS Act.” Bhullar said the efficiency of these officers in arresting every drug peddler allotted to them would reflect in their Annual Confidential Report (ACR).

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police said in last six months, the commissionerate has registered 102 cases against drug peddlers under the NDPS Act, adding that 135 people have been arrested in this regard. He said the police have recovered 2.50 kg heroin, 16.50 kg opium, 676 gm intoxicant powder, 387.50-kg poppy husk, 150-gm smack, 8.60-kg ganja, 145-gm charas, 3,721 capsules, 473 injections, 25,000 tablets and 199 bottles of syrup from drug peddlers.

Bhullar said besides this, a pistol (32 bore) with five live cartridges, one country-made (desi) pistol (315 bore) with three cartridges, one Honda City car, one truck and currency notes, too, have been recovered from smugglers. He said the drive against drugs would continue in coming the days as well.
