Jalandhar, July 8

During drives held by teams of the Health Department and the MC, dengue larvae were found at 28 places in the district today. The larvae were destroyed on the spot.

The teams inspected 483 homes for dengue larvae. With the help of the municipal corporation, anti-larva teams of the Health Department visited Basti Peer Daad, Sudama Nagar, the Police Lines, Kamal Vihar, Kabir Nagar, Avtar Nagar, Raseela Nagar, Makhdoompura, and other areas. The teams checked 139 coolers, 18 tyres and 764 scrap containers. The teams sprayed larvicide in 36 rooms to prevent the breeding of mosquitos.

Meanwhile, the teams of the Health Department led by epidemiologist Dr Aditya Paul visited Government Primary School, Basti Peer Daad. A dengue awareness seminar was also held at the school on the occasion.

Dr Aditya Paul apprised students that dengue spreads with symptoms like fever, pain in head and muscles, pimples on skin, pain behind the eyes, bleeding from gums, ear or nose etc. He said whenever such symptoms are seen, one should immediately visit a doctor. He said to protect oneself from dengue, one should prevent the accumulation of water in coolers, fridge trays, pots, animal water troughs and tyres at roofs at home.

He said the purpose of Dry Day was to clean any such places of accumulated water which might act as a potential breeding place for the dengue mosquitoes.

An awareness campaign against diseases like dengue, malaria and chikungunya was also started in Kapurthala district today. Civil Surgeon Gurinderbir Kaur said due to mass breeding of mosquitos in the monsoon, they become the cause for the spread of diseases like dengue, malaria and chikungunya. She said as part of ongoing Dry Day drives, coolers, utensils, etc, were also inspected and cleared of water.

She said private card tests being done for dengue were not enough to confirm dengue. She said the tests being done at government hospitals were the only conclusive way to officially confirm the disease. She exhorted staff to ensure Eliza tests as the only means to establish dengue cases. The Civil Surgeon said dengue and malaria were notifiable disease as per the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897, as per which it is mandatory for private hospitals to submit case reports regarding the twin diseases to the Health Department. They said violation of the notification could invite action against private hospitals not intimating about cases.

So far, 11 cases of dengue have been reported in Jalandhar this monsoon season. While a week ago there were 10 cases, in the past week there has been an addition of one more case.
