Jammu, January 3

Terrorism continues to be a major challenge for security forces across the state. The first couple of days of 2019 have shown that there has been no let-up in Pakistan-sponsored militancy in the state.

On the first day of the year, a special police officer (SPO) in Pulwama district was shot dead by militants while the ceasefire has been violated by Pakistan on the Line of Control (LoC) four times since January 1. The first encounter of 2019 broke out today in the Tral area of Pulwama district in which three militants were killed and three soldiers injured.

“Terrorism is the biggest challenge as terrorists always try to strike security installations. We have to remain alert all the time to thwart any such attempt,” said MK Sinha, Inspector General of Police, Jammu zone.

Militant organisations are trying to revive terrorism in the Jammu region as well and recruitment of a few local educated youth is a step towards their game plan. There are enough indications given by intelligence agencies that militant outfits are looking to have new recruits from Doda, Rajouri and Poonch districts, said sources.
