Srinagar, December 11

Several villages of the Gurez area in Bandipora district will soon get mobile connectivity as the administration had laid a cable through the Adit-I tunnel of the Kishenganga Hydro-Electric Project (KHEP).

An official spokesman said on Tuesday that on the directions of Deputy Commissioner Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, the administration in collaboration with Hindustan Construction Company took up the tough task of dewatering 650-m Adit-I tunnel. The work was completed on December 9, the spokesman added.

The Deputy Commissioner said there was a growing demand from habitations of the Gurez valley for mobile connectivity. In October this year, the Gurez valley got the 4G mobile connectivity for the first time though certain areas continued to be without it owing to tough terrain and being close to the Line of Control.

Choudhary said the district administration took a risk during the winter to dewater the tunnel so that it could be used to lay BSNL cable.
