When Nick Jonas pulled off the ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ moment, closing down the Tiffany, New York, to pick a ring for his famous lady love, he added many more to the ‘Prick’ bandwagon. While Julia Roberts’ loyalists would put the conference climax of Notting Hill as a stiff competition to the Tiffany’s act, people in real too walk that extra mile to woo their loved ones.

When actor Aryeman Bhatia chose to propose Dr Simer Kaur, he made a man sit atop a tree in sector 33 with a basket of roses. Simer, currently enjoying a holiday in Red Beach, Santorini with her hubby dearest, recalls the day with much glee. “My friend, Dr Aman, asked me to meet her at a designated spot. When I couldn’t see her anywhere around, I called only to be told to go under the tree. As I stepped, there was a shower of rose petals and next I found Aryeman down on a knee with a ring in hand. I had to say yes,” she laughs.

Fly along

For Sona, the planning was way more elaborate. She wanted to do something grand for her friend-turned-boyfriend before they took in the Mr and Mrs roles. Along with common friends, they whisked him to Dhanipur airstrip in Aligarh. As soon as two of them were airborne in a chartered plane, she gifted him four notes along with as many gifts; the last being a watch with a note that said — I want to spend all my time with you and want yours in return. “Being dizzy and completely oblivious to the plan, it was only when we landed that he realised what it all meant,” Sona recalls and how merrily he said his yes!

If being private is one, Indian television has its own story. Ravi Dubey proposed to Chandigarh girl Sargun Mehta on the sets of Nach Baliye, live on national TV. Chandigarh boy Prince Narula chose a wedding ramp show to profess his love for Yuvika Chaudhary.  

Grand locations

Talking of love, can fairy tales be behind? High School Musical star Corbin Bleu created a Cinderella moment for actor Sasha Clements during a trip to Walt Disney and proposed with a ring hidden in a glass slipper. Another proposal befitting a queen was when Prince William chose Kenya to be the perfect backdrop to propose Kate Middleton with his mother’s 18-carat sapphire-and-diamond ring, catapulting William and Kate to Duke and Duchess of Cambridge title.

Private setting

Not all fancy proposals take a wild safari though. Recently declared the highest-paid actor and the one ruling women’s hearts for last four decades, George Clooney, chose the warm setting of the home to propose to celebrated human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin. It did take a circuitous route for George to make Amal reach the ring that lay hidden in a matchbox. Closer home, Imran Khan stealthily entered his girlfriend’s house, decorating it with candles before going down on the knee to surprise Avantika.

Wrestler John Cena chose Wrestlemania ring to gift a ring to WWE star Nikki Bella on live television. However, a year later, the couple decided to choose friendship over a relationship.

Well, a grand proposal is no guarantee for a lifetime of happiness, but no harm in trying a different route!
