Despite several years of its existence, many ladies continue to be hazy about the idea of boyfriend… jeans we mean! Are they supposed to be baggy, relaxed, loose-fitted; look like borrowed from the boys, or just plain be slouchy when worn?  While the jury gets unanimous on that one, the jeans continue to take many more cuts and shapes. 

In the long list of Hollywood celebs, tired of their skinnies, Katie Holmes was the first to be notably seen on New York streets in pair after pair and almost 10 years ago, making the fashion-watchers speculate, whether they belonged to husband Tom Cruise! ‘They couldn’t because she had to turn them up,’ it was the length that gave away.  “I always find them comfortable,” said Katie at an Old Navy event. “I always like juxtaposing something messed up with classic. I like boyfriend jeans with cool heels.” 

Indian connect 

Bollywood’s younger crop hasn’t been far behind in befriending them, though these are often sported as part of ‘airport look’. Sonam Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Anushka Sharma, have all had their dates with  boyfriend jeans. GAP’s recent spring-summer collection comprises a refreshed version of the classic look; being rolled out in distressed version to the relaxed fit. 

Gap India’s spokesperson and business head Parag Dani speaks of how it made the perfect business sense to have the silhouette available in a variety of fabrics too, from tencel to wear-light denim, and in a host of treatments such as distress, destruct, embroidered, and repaired, among others. “While they have a relaxed vibe and can be styled to a clean look when cuffed and worn with a simple tee and flats, they can definitely be worn for a casual night out by being paired with tank-tops to button-ups to blouses.” 

Nail the look 

Boyfriend jeans aren’t really about the fit (there is no specimen perfect fit when it comes to this silhouette), thereby making it all the more mandatory to style it right.  Supermodel Rosie Huntington, the uncrowned queen of denims, once doled out the best style advise ever on boyfriend jeans, “I live in them. I like to wear them rolled up at the end, with heels or strappy sandals. There are no major rules. It totally depends on what your mood is.” That sums it up, perhaps!
