Ludhiana, February 22

With the arrest of three members of a gang the police claimed to have cracked a blind case of carjacking from a city-based man.

The suspects arrested by the Crime Branch 2 have been identified as Lakhwinder Singh Lucky (19), a resident of Jamalpur, Ravinder Singh, alias Ravi (22), a resident of Mundian Kalan, and Sandeep Kumar, alias Prince, a resident of Rattewal village in Nawanshahr district.

In a press conference here today, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Investigation, Gagan Ajit Singh, said on December 19, 2018, the suspects had looted Swift Dzire car while posing as customers at the car bazaar in Jamalpur. They had also seriously injured Sanjiv Kumar, an employee of the car bazaar.

The DCP revealed that Lucky was the gang leader, while Ravinder was doing PVC business and Sandeep was a farmer. They had looted the car to smuggle illegal liquor.

After looting the car from Ludhiana, the suspects brought consignment of illegal liquor from the nearby districts and sold it in Ludhiana district, the DCP added.

“In the past two months, the suspects had used the looted car over three times to bring and supply illegal liquor. Further probe is still on to bust to the entire supply line of liquor smuggling,” the DCP said.

So far, except the carjacking incident, no other criminal background of the suspects was found during the investigation, the DCP added. It could be possible that they looted the car just to supply illegal liquor, the DCP said.

Notably, when the car was intercepted at a naka laid at Basti Jodhewal Chowk, officials found that a fake number plate was affixed on the vehicle just to befool the police. However, the police was sure about movement of the gang in Ludhiana, which led to the arrest of its members.
