Ludhiana, July 14

The contractual staff of the Punjab Roadways has once again declared to go on three-day strike from July 16.

This declaration was made by the Punjab Roadways Punbus Contract Workers’ Union president Resham Singh after a meeting of union representatives with Director Transport in Chandigarh on Friday.

According to Resham Singh, the union decided to go on strike because the state government had failed to fulfil various long-pending demands of the Punbus Contract Workers’ Union. “The state government has been continuously delaying to fulfil various long-pending demands of the Punbus contract workers. We held a meeting with Director Transport at his office in Chandigarh to resolve the issue, but it seems the government is not serious about the demands of contract workers. Therefore, we have decided to go on three-day strike,” said Resham Singh.

The main demands include regularisation of senior contract workers, implementation of equal work, equal pay verdict of the Supreme Court, merging of contract workers in the Punjab Roadways and end of contract system among others.

Resham said all buses run by Punbus staff would remain off road for three days. He said the contract workers would organise rallies in different parts of the state and also gherao the residence of Transport Minister on July 17.
