Ishroop Narang of Ludhiana has made the city proud after winning silver medal in judo in the ongoing 4th Khelo India Youth Games at Panchkula on Sunday.
Competing in the below 63-kg weight category (U-17 years), she stormed her way into the final wherein she waged a spirited battle against Nandini Vats from Delhi before losing the bout.
Ishroop started playing basketball and athletics seven years ago but discontinued with these games due to lack of interest. Then she took up judo and joined the Ludhiana Judo Coaching Centre, run here at the multipurpose indoor hall, opposite Guru Nanak Stadium where coaches of the Punjab Sports Department, Navdeep Jindal and Parveen Thakur, train players.
Ishroop stole limelight when she won bronze medal in the plus 44kg weight category in the National School Games held at Ranchi in Jharkhand. In 2019, she secured bronze medal in her maiden international competition. She finished at the victory podium in the Commonwealth Judo Championship held at Walsall, Birmingham, United Kingdom.
Ishroop represented the country in the World Junior Judo Championship held last year at Olbia in Italy wherein she took part in the +78kg weight category. She competed against the best judokas of the world and gained invaluable match exposure.
She gave a stunning performance that impressed the selection panel to choose her in the junior section for the World championship next month. She would participate in the +78 kg group.
Ravinder Singh, District Sports Officer congratulated Ishroop on winning medal at Panchkula and wished her more success in future also.
