Ludhiana, June 25
Demanding action against the persons who are allegedly seen raising religious slogans while consuming and serving alcohol in viral video clips, members of various Sikh organisations blocked traffic on Jagraon Bridge this evening. The protest that started around 5:30 pm was still on when the reports last came in at 9:50 pm.
The protesters demanded the arrest of the persons allegedly involved in the act that hurt their religious sentiments.
The protest caused a major traffic jam on the bridge. The police tried to dissuade the protesters from continuing the dharna but they were adamant on immediate action against the erring persons.
According to information, a few video clips, in which some persons are seen serving and consuming liquor while raising religious slogans, went viral yesterday.
Talks were on between the members of Sikh organisations and the police to defuse the situation. Youth Akali Dal president Gurdeep Singh Gosha, who participated in the protest, said they had demanded action against the erring persons for hurting religious sentiments.
A commuter, who was stuck in the traffic jam, said: “It is wrong to hold protest by causing troubles for commuters. Instead of blocking traffic, they should protest in a democratic way.”
DCP Ashwani Kapoor said the police had assured the protesters that action would be taken against the persons seen in the viral videos. The protesters have been assured that an FIR will be registered against the suspects.
Apology video
Another video clip has also gone viral in which the erring persons have tendered apology and sought forgiveness. They say they are ashamed of what they have done by mistake and they will never repeat such mistake.
