Over three weeks after MLA Ashok Parashar Pappi caught parking staff overcharging fee from visitors at the multi-storey, a team of the Municipal Corporation today conducted a “surprise checking at the same lot and found the contractor violating the rules”.

The MC’s Tehbazari Superintendent at Zone A stated that they conducted a surprise checking at the multi-storey parking lot today. The superintendent said they found that the contractor was overcharging and issuing manual fee slips to visitors. As per the rules, the contractor was supposed to use only e-ticket machine for issuing fee slip to visitors. Besides, “misbehaviour” with public is another issue at this lot.

He said they found that the employees working under the contractor were not wearing uniform and had no identity cards. Moreover, the contractor did not ensure cleaning of the parking lot. CCTV cameras were also found non-functional.

MC Superintendent Parvinder Kalra said the contractor had been asked to deposit a penalty of Rs 7,000 for violating the rules.

Sources said the parking lot contractor was a close aide of some politicians.

No check at Bhadaur House, AC Market parking lots

The contractor has not displayed any parking fee boards at Bhadaur House and AC market parking lots to date. Visitors complained about overcharging at these lots a number of times in the past too, but the MC authorities are yet to take any action in this regard. However, Kalra said a notice would be served to the contractor concerned.

It is required to mention that employees at a majority of the parking lots don’t wear uniform and ID cards. Besides, CCTV cameras have not been installed at most of the parking lots. Despite repeated attempts, Tejinder Singh Panchhi, a senior official of the Tehbazari wing, could not be contacted for his comments.

Meanwhile, AAP spokesperson Ahbaab Singh Grewal had given a statement that the state government would ensure the elimination of parking mafia from the city.
